Flight Simulator Yoke Buying - Find The Best For You

By Mark Green

The more realistic you make your flight simulator experience, the more fun you will have. Most people start with the keyboard and mouse, progress to a joystick and in the end look to go to the next level and discover the thrill of flying with a yoke. These days there are many enhancements you can make over the simple setup of a monitor, mouse and keyboard.

If you are looking for just one improvement, that will really add to your enjoyment and bring you closer to the feeling of flying a real plane, you can't go past a flight simulator yoke. There are a number to choose from and it is worth spending a little time to understand what the differences are, as choosing the right one may mean the difference between having the most fun flying and a very frustrating experience.

The most basic check is that the yoke you are considering will work with your computer, your computer's operating system and of course your flight simulator software. If you have an older system, check that the yoke will work with your operating system. Most yokes will plug into the USB port, so make sure you have one available. A plug and play yoke is also a nice to have, as it means that you only have to plug it in and your operating system will recognise it without you having to install drivers or configure it. Check the yoke for what flight simulator software that is supports, some offer out of the box support and little to no configuring is required.

Have a look at where the yoke is made and what materials it is made from. Of course you will generally get what you pay for, but be aware that a cheaper yoke will probably be made out of light plastic parts that will not have the same feeling as a real yoke, as it will feel light and weak. We are looking for a control that will add to the realism of the experience and not one that feels and performs like a toy. If you pay a little more, you will get a yoke that is made out of quality stronger parts and as well as lasting longer, will have a solid feel, closer to what you would find in a real aircraft.

Yokes can differ in the number of extra controls they offer. Do you want a basic yoke that can just control the elevators and ailerons? Do you want your yoke to be a full 'control column' that has throttle controls, prop , mix, gear and buttons to program what aircraft features are controlled, with one of the more advanced models, it is possible to be almost keyboard free.

Many people wish they had upgraded years ago once they start flying with a yoke. Before you buy, use the information here to make sure you purchase the right yoke for you.
