The animated film, Chicken Run, directed by Peter Lord and Nick Park is one of the major hits of 2000. It has already bagged a Golden Globe nomination and a number of other awards and nominations. The film is a comic drama and set in the Yorkshire of England in the 1950s'.
The film portrays the romance between two farm bred chickens, Rocky and Ginger. These two chickens yearn for freedom and hit upon an escape plan as seen in the movies. The chicken farm is known as the Tweedy Egg Farm. Ginger is one of the chickens in this farm who is desperate to flee the farm but is always let down by her incompetent partners. She is extremely capable of fleeing the farm but bad luck does not seem to desert her.
One night a chicken gets axed in the Tweedy farm. Ginger is very upset and wanders around when suddenly a rooster come crashing drown. He introduces himself as Rocky and he has escaped from a circus. He is enjoying his new found freedom to the fullest. Ginger requests him to help her and company to flee from the Tweedy farm. He agrees but in return asks Ginger to save him when the circus people will come looking for him.
Ginger hits upon a plan. He requests Rocky to devise so that all of them can flee the farm. This has become necessary as the Tweedys' have bought a machine to make chicken pies and they have decided to chop all the chickens in the farm. Rocky agrees to help and in the process he leaves no opportunity to irritate the chicken as much as he can. But what really happens in the film? Is Ginger successful in fleeing the farm? What happens to Rocky? There are many questions which the viewer might ask but they should be left unanswered as I do not want to give away the full synopsis of the movie and thereby spoiling the fun for you.
The Chicken Run movie is a family entertainer and is a hit in every single country. The kids just love to watch the antics of the chickens as they create a number of humorous scenes in the movies. The film itself has a healthy mix of humor and intellectual parodies. The fun element of the movie gets pronounced once Rocky enters the scene. Mel Gibson weaves magic as the voice of Rocky and Julia Sawalha as the voice of Ginger is very enterprising. There is hardly any part of the movie that needs improvement.
If you really hell bent on finding some fault in this movie then you can point to the animated chicken characters. The animated characters do not really look like the actual chickens. But this hardly makes any difference to the uniqueness or novelty of the film.
