The Super Furry Animals always have something new up their sleeves. The SFA has quite the reputation with 9 full length albums under their belt. They have a great sense of humor and also love to experiment with instruments and new sounds. They can definitely keep the audiences attention and their newest two albums have a different, slower feeling to them. However their Dark Days Light Years touches back to their more playful aspects.
Dark Days Light Years is very dance-worthy, and instead of being very structured, like their last album Hey Venus!, Dark Days Light Years has a much more relaxed, capricious, and even silly feel to it! As usual, the Super Furry Animals employ a broad range of instruments and styles. Instead of having a unifying theme or mood overall, the album skips around, offering your crazy dance themes, perfect pop anthems, slower ballads, and even a folk song! Some people have said that the album is simply a hodgepodge of tracks, but others have described it as a really great collection of singles. SFA is giving us a different way to look at the idea of an album. As usual, they refuse to limit themselves, delving into almost every style imaginable.
The album begins with the song Crazy Naked Girls, a psychedelic acid trip that utilizes the whammy bar as thoroughly as possible. The song's mammoth riffs lead straight into the track Mt., which is a interesting mix of glam and folk styles; the song is basically what happens when David Bowie meets John Denver. Ever creative, the Super Furry Animals employ the use of an erhu in the song. An ehru is a two-stringed Chinese instrument that you play with a bow.
The next track, Moped Eyes, is pure pop. Following this track, SFA gives us a track that lets us know exactly what it feels like to go skiing in Switzerland in the late eighties while wearing bright neon ski bibs. Nick McCarthy, the guitarist from the band Franz Ferdinand, is a guest singer on this track and performs a rap in German! What can we say? SFA never fails to surprise and astound.
If you take the time to listen to this album you definitely won't be sorry that you did! Their new Dark Days Light Years is amazing and makes you just want to get up and dance. They have a great mix of humor throughout the album (and their entire career) and they leave fans wanting more.
